I knew God had called me to write a book about praying Scripture, and I needed Him to help me do so. Every time I came across a Bible verse that inspired my writing, I recorded it on a list I kept in my prayer journal. I’d read through and pray the writing-related Scriptures before I started writing. Or when I felt led to pray for specific things for my writing, I’d look up the related Scriptures.

My guess is you know you need to be praying for your writing too. Maybe you’re not sure how to get started praying for your writing. Or you’re looking for fresh words and Scriptures to pray. You’ve come to the right place my friend.

Below are some of my favorite prayer prompts and Scriptures I like to pray for my writing and ministry. There’s plenty of other relevant Scriptures, but this list should help you get started in praying over your writing.

Bookmark this page or print out this list and pray several of these verses before you sit down to write. Maybe you want to pray or journal one a day. It’s up to you, but personalize each Scripture for your own writing ministry.

25 Prayer Prompts and Scriptures to Pray for Your Writing

  1. Pray that you would write not in your own power, but equipped with God’s power. “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

  2. Pray that you would claim and walk in your calling and purpose as a writer. “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners, and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18-19

  3. Pray that as you write you would be focused on God’s approval more than people’s. “Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10

  4. Pray against Satan’s attacks on your calling and your writing ministry and pray on your armor of God. “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” Ephesians 6:13-18

  5. Pray that you would share the words God has given you without fear. “Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the Gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.” Ephesians 4:19

  6. Prayerfully yield your writing to the Lord, seeking His wisdom, guidance, and strategies to write, publish, and market your books successfully. “Commit your work to the Lord and your plans will be established.” Proverbs 16:3

  7. Pray for God’s wisdom regarding your writing ministry. “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5

  8. Pray that you would be diligent to continue sharing God’s message with others through your writing and in every aspect of your life. “Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.” 1 Timothy 4:13-16

  9. Pray that you would find a godly writing community, or if you’re already part of one, that you would be an encouraging member. “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25

  10. Pray for your readers. “For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.” Colossians 1:9

  11. Pray that you would not get distracted by comparing your writing ministry and your platform to others’. “We will not compare ourselves with each other as if one of us were better and another worse. We have far more interesting things to do with our lives. Each of us is an original.” Galatians 5:26 MSG

  12. Pray that you would not get discouraged from pursuing your call to write. “Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.” 2 Corinthians 4:1

  13. Pray that you would boldly pursue your calling and share God’s Word and truths accurately with others. “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:14

  14. Pray that your writing ministry and the work of your hands would be blessed. “Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!” Psalm 90:17

  15. Pray that the words and stories you share would bring God’s hope and healing to your readers. “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Proverbs 16:24

  16. Pray that you would be patient with where God has you in your writing journey. “The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by patience produce a crop.” Luke 8:14-15

  17. Pray that God would use your words and stories to impact His kingdom. “They overcame him (Satan) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” Revelation 12:11a

  18. Pray that you would persevere in your writing efforts, despite obstacles or discouragement. “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9

  19. Pray that you and your writing would be completely surrendered to God and used for His glory. “Therefore, I urge you in view of God’s mercy to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.” Romans 12:1

  20. Pray that God would equip you with all you need to accomplish His will in your writing ministry. “May the God of peace…equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” Hebrews 13:20-21

  21. Pray that you would humbly do the work He has given you to do, and give all honor and praise to God. “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17

  22. Ask God for wisdom, opportunities, or anything else you’d like to see Him do in your writing ministry. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened." Matthew 7:7

  23. Pray that you would be spirit-led as you go about your writing and platform building, rather than led by the ways of the world. “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.” Galatians 5:16

  24. Thank God for the message He has given you to share and how He has uniquely equipped you to do so. “For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge.” 1 Corinthians 1:5

  25. Thank God that He is with you, restoring you, equipping you, and gently guiding you as you write. “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” Psalm 23:1-3
