A few years ago, I had a beautiful encounter in which my church community prayed Scripture over me. It was powerful to hear the women in my Bible study claiming God’s Word over me and I realized it was something I was missing from my own prayer practice.

I wanted to learn to pray Scripture, and so I decided to learn about it. And I haven’t stopped reading and learning about it since. Below are some of my favorite books to help you grow in the practice of praying Scripture:

Praying the Bible by Donald S. Whitney

This is a short but sweet little hardcover book about praying Scripture. It may be a little repetitive, but it is full of encouragement and practical tips for praying Scripture. It offers strategies about how to incorporate God’s Word into your prayers during your daily Bible reading time. This book specifically focuses on how to pray the psalms, which I found very helpful, especially if you’re new to the practice of praying Scripture.

Praying the Scriptures Series by Jodie Berndt

Jodie Berndt has written a whole series of books that help you pray for various areas in your life:

I highly recommend every one of her books depending on your situation!

On the Same Page with God by Jenn Soehnlin

I wrote this book to help you view the Bible as a treasure trove of prayer possibilities, providing you with the words that can align your heart and your will with God. I share about the benefits of praying Scripture and testimonies about the transformative power of getting on the same page with God, both literally and figuratively. Filled with compelling narratives, biblical insights, practical prayer strategies, and lists of Scriptures to pray on a variety of topics, I hope this book will help you revitalize your prayer life and deepen your faith with the practice of praying God’s Word.

Fervent by Priscilla Shirer

I read this book when it first came out, and then again a few months ago and enjoyed it both times immensely. It is a great book to help you learn to pray against spiritual warfare and find spiritual victory in your life.

Praying God’s Word: Breaking Free of Spiritual Strongholds by Beth Moore

This is the first book I read about the power of praying Scripture, and I’ve read it several times now. It’s a fantastic guide to help you know why and how we should use Scripture to grow in our faith and to overcome spirititual battles using the power of prayer and God’s Word combined.

Prayer Bible by Thomas Nelson Publishing

BONUS: The best book to help you learn to pray is the Bible itself, and what better Bible to help you learn to pray then the Prayer Bible. This Bible (NKJV) includes a prayer prompt at the end of every single chapter of the Bible to help you pray the Word you just read. It is a great tool to help you grow in Bible study and in prayer as you read and pray God’s Word cover to cover. I love the beautiful leather cover and that included inside are tips for praying Scripture, the words of Jesus are in red, there’s a Bible reading plan to help you read the Bible in a year, a ribbon bookmark, and space in the margin for taking notes.
